Getting Started

Collection

To begin, click Add Collection in the sidebar. This will be where you add your Image Sets.

Image Sets

There are three ways to add images to your Collection:

  • By uploading images
  • By using direct URLs
  • By using IIIF image URLS.

Click Add Image Set.

  1. To upload an image, click Upload Local Image.
  2. To use a direct URL, click Add Remote Image.
  3. To use an IIIF image URL, click Add IIIF Image.

Each image must be given a title and saved. When you are finished adding images to your image set, give a title to the whole image set and click Create to save.

Annotation

Now that you have your images, you can annotate them. Click Annotate, then click Add Annotation Set.

You can have multiple Annotation Sets for an image. If you share your Collection with other users, they can add their own Annotation Set.

Drawing

Choose an annotation tool, then draw a shape over the image to make an annotation.

There are 5 annotation drawing tools to create a variety of different shapes. The first four are straightforward to use. If you use the last tool, you must double click to complete the drawing.

Once you finish drawing, give your annotation a title and description. Click Create to finish.

Notes and Tags

Notes and Tags are supplementary information you can provide to the annotations. Whether or not you see these tabs will depend on the annotation template you have applied.

Click the Notes tab to add additional notes to your annotation. These may include quotes or references. You can also add a Date.

Click the Tags tab to select specific vocabulary terms related to your image. These may help other researchers understand your annotations more clearly.

Publishing

Now that you have saved your annotations, you can publish them. This is a two-step process.

  1. Go back to the Annotations Set List page and click the Publish icon. This publishes the Annotation Set.
  2. Go to the Collection page, and click Publish on your Image Set. This publishes the Image Set.

If you do not complete both steps, the annotation will not appear in your publication.

If you wish, you can also publish the entire Collection. You will still need to make sure each Image Set is also individually published.

Public URL, Embed Code and IIIF Manifest

When you publish an Image Set, you create three outputs. Click Public URL on the Image Set to find these.

  • The Public URL is the public viewer where your annotations will be shown, if you have also published an Annotation Set.
  • The Embed Code can be pasted into a web page to display the viewer on a website.
  • The IIIF Manifest is the code for the manifest of the IIIF version of the data in the Image Set, which can be used in other IIIF tools.

Sharing

At any time, you can share your Collection with other users. This gives them the opportunity to annotate the Image Sets in the Collection. To do this, go to the Collection page, click Share, and enter the recipient’s email.

In the same way, you can also have Collections shared with you by others, and add your own annotations to their Image Sets.
