IIIF Annotation Framework

NEW Bulletin Brand Header 2
Bulletin heading 2

Hi,

Hope you might find our Glycerine newsletter useful. We will provide the latest information on Glycerine features and workflows as well as insights into the integration of IIIF annotation in the research and GLAM sectors.

In this issue we showcase new features (annotation templates and infrastructure integration) as well outlines of each of our modules. In subsequent newsletters we will introduce case studies and our roadmap for integration of Glycerine with generative AI. You’ll find links at the bottom to register with the IIIF consortium for our April Glycerine showcases.

All the best
Ian McCrabb

Annotation Templates provide a structured way to define the fields used in annotations. Projects can use preset templates or create custom ones with configurable fields, including HTML-enabled content, and apply different templates across annotation layers. You can use different Templates to annotate your images with different kinds of information.

Infrastructure Integration enables institutions to embed IIIF annotation capabilities directly within existing digital asset and collections management systems. Using modular components such as Glycerine Server and Editor, annotations can be created, stored, and aggregated into authoritative IIIF manifests while preserving existing repository and workflow infrastructure.

Workbench
Glycerine Workbench provides annotation tools, configurable templates, and collaborative workflows for researchers, curators, and students working across repositories. Images can be organised into collections and shared with collaborators. Annotations combine semantic tags from domain vocabularies with multilingual commentary and analysis, producing fully IIIF-compliant outputs suitable for publication and long-term archiving.

1

Viewer
Glycerine Viewer is an open-source IIIF viewer designed for research, gallery, and museum use. It supports the IIIF Presentation API and displays manifests and compliant annotations from multiple tools. Built with a modern UI framework, it offers an elegant interface and advanced annotation features, and can be embedded in Vue 3 or other JavaScript applications.

Server
Glycerine Server provides the back-end data model and APIs for integrating Glycerine with institutional digital asset and collections management systems. It delivers IIIF support, collection management, and collaboration features. The platform also includes Glycerine Image Server, a scalable IIIF image service built on Cantaloupe for controlled resource access and delivery.

3

Editor
Glycerine Editor brings the annotation editing capabilities of Glycerine Workbench into the intuitive Glycerine Viewer interface. Curators can create and edit annotations directly on IIIF images within existing collection workflows. GLAM institutions can integrate the Editor into their content management systems, enabling researchers and contributors to add annotation layers to images.

4

Plugin
Embed annotated IIIF images directly in WordPress to create research outputs and collection exhibitions. The Glycerine Plugin supports searchable galleries, presentation carousels, and individual annotation segments. Flexible configuration allows publication of virtual collections with image segments, metadata, and commentary. The open-source plugin is available from the WordPress plugin store.
