Gandhāran Buddha and Bodhisattva statues are among the earliest anthropomorphic images of the Buddha; this project undertakes an art-historical analysis of their iconography to clarify the doctrinal and ritual meanings embedded in these forms. Working through Glycerine’s IIIF-native annotation environment, the project layers close visual analysis directly onto high-resolution images, allowing iconographic features to be tagged, compared and cross-referenced against textual and epigraphic sources at the level of individual sculptural details.
Glycerine Workbench and Viewer are deployed to implement and publish scholarly and gallery annotation sets across institutional collections and repositories.
